过去的别洛韦日原始森林十分美丽，成群的麋鹿、原山羊、野猪穿行于树林中。空气中弥漫着鲜花、松树、云杉、蕨类植物的香气，野玫瑰、树莓和蘑菇也在这里散发着芬芳。许多去过比别洛韦日原始森林或是居住在这里的人们都不禁会问：这片森林的名字从何而来？有些人认为这个名字出自14世纪的当地历史学家之手，这些历史学家错误地认为这片森林的名字源于“白塔”。人们常常认为 卡梅涅茨塔 是白色的。事实上，卡梅涅茨塔 并非白色。但比别洛韦日原始森林的名字就这样流传了下来，人们在自己的传说故事、流行小说和童话中都这样描述别洛韦日原始森林，这中间的许多内容都是我们祖先们所见证的真实历史的反映。
在近一个世纪的时间里，卡梅涅茨. 别洛韦日原始森林一直是立陶宛大公国和波兰大公国之间发生武装冲突的地方。1366年，卡梅涅茨地区被科斯塔特王子占有，随后维陶塔斯公爵又成为他的主人。 维陶塔斯公爵把这里的森林赐给了自己的女儿，因为他的女儿钟情于大自然，她喜欢森林中繁复的色彩、鸟儿的鸣唱，还有那些低语的动物。维陶塔斯公爵的女儿特别喜欢到这片森林中休养，还经常站在卡梅涅茨塔的顶端俯瞰森林。她是整个地区最美丽的姑娘，拥有动人的白色长辫和黑色眉毛。她喜欢白色的服饰，冬天身披白色毛皮制作的衣服，夏日里穿着白色连衣裙和白帽。人们都称她为白色的公主。公主的美丽让人无法抗拒，从她身边经过的人都会叹服于她的美丽。这种女性的美丽也是一种自然的美景。公主后来爱上了波兰亲王雅盖沃英俊潇洒的儿子，这两个坠入爱河的年轻人都热爱自然，也十分喜欢别洛韦日原始森林的自然美景和野生动物。他们梦想着如何能够一直保持这片森林繁荣美丽的景色。不幸的是，1383年，雅盖沃亲王与维陶塔斯公爵之间发生了军事冲突，双方两败俱伤，维陶塔斯公爵占领了卡梅涅茨塔。这对相爱的恋人根本无法分离，尽管双方的父母坚决反对，两个人还是决定结婚。公主就在卡梅涅茨塔的城墙下等待自己的爱人。从那以后，两个人搬往城市居住，这座城市现在被称为比亚韦斯托克。不过，一年之后，雅盖沃亲王重新围攻卡梅涅茨塔长达一个星期。最终，雅盖沃亲王与维陶塔斯公爵达成和解，卡梅涅茨塔归还给了雅盖沃亲王。达成和解后，双方决定正式允许自己的孩子结婚，而婚礼就在卡梅涅茨塔举行。 在婚礼上，身着白衣的新郎和新娘乘坐在白色的马车上在卡梅涅茨塔中穿行了三次，最终返回了城市定居，这也就是现在的别洛韦日。新郎新娘穿行的道路覆盖着白色的布匹，这些布匹由普夏村的妇女们用亚麻编织而成，然后在河水中漂白。整个城堡的地面和外墙也被涂成了白色，也都与那位美丽的白色公主有关，而别洛韦日原始森林的名字也由此而来。
