An address to Polish people was adopted at a meeting of patriotic forces of the Republic of Belarus on 9 August, BelTA has learned.
The text of the address was read out by Director General of the National Library of Belarus, political scientist Vadim Gigin.
“Polish brothers! It so happens that we are neighbors. Belarusian and Polish peoples share hundreds of years of common history. Our relations have had their ups and downs. There were periods of bad blood between us. Yet, we do not want ghosts of the past, like whimsy landlords or figures like Piłsudski, to keep us apart. We want to be united by the spirit of the Battle of Grunwald when we banded together to fight real threats. We remember well that many great representatives of Polish culture were born on Belarusian soil. But this does not give you the reason to treat our land as your ‘Kresy Wschodnie’. Belarusians are a big, proud and independent Slavic nation. We have our own glorious traditions. Being intoxicated by chauvinism, your politicians do and say things that add fuel to the flame of war. Let’s not allow anyone to burn down our common home!” the address reads.
By their nature, Belarusians are calm, peaceful and hardworking people. “Yet, we will not tolerate any overlords over us! The history of the struggle of Western Belarus is an illustrative example to prove this. We are proud of Sergei Pritytsky, Vera Khoruzhaya, Kirill Orlovsky and Maksim Tank, many thousands of other patriots who did not spare their lives to unite the Belarusian people. October 2023 marks the 80th anniversary of that memorable day when the Polish 1st Tadeusz Kościuszko Infantry Division entered the fight against the Nazism, our common enemy, on Belarusian soil, near the village of Lenino, Mogilev Oblast. It heroically fought against the Third Reich whose leaders planned to carry out genocide on our lands. Let’s revere the memory of the soldiers who were united by the common Great Victory.”
“We hope that you, fellow Poles, will have the wisdom to refrain from an armed confrontation. We would like to believe that you will not let yourselves be fooled by aggressive propaganda. After all, everyone, regardless of their ethnicity, wants to live in peace and prosperity and to be on good terms with their neighbors. You should know that we are determined to defend our home, our families and our sacred Motherland. History knows many examples of how Belarusians rebuffed the invasion from the West. Do not rush to experience it first hand. We are sure that common sense will help us overcome the current difficult period in our relations. And it will not take long before Belarusians and Poles will be able to resume smooth interaction, respecting the traditions of our peoples.”

I recently learned my surname is not Polish, but Belarusian. I heard you on shortwave in the past and am so happy to listen online in English. We hear nothing about Belarus here in the US so I am so glad to learn about your country. Keep on broadcasting in English. I also joined the Hoererklub on Facebook as I can understand German.
