今天，白俄罗斯共和国庆祝民族团结日。该节日于2021年6月7日由白俄罗斯总统亚历山大·卢卡申科签署第206号总统令设立。
这一节日是为了纪念1939年红军在西白俄罗斯的解放进军。此次行动使得根据《里加和平条约》被分割的白俄罗斯人民重新团结在一起。
由于1919-1920年的波苏战争，白俄罗斯的领土被分割。东部地区建立了属于苏联的白俄罗斯苏维埃社会主义共和国，而西部地区则并入波兰。这些土地在战争期间被波兰占领，一部分依据1921年3月18日签署的《里加和平条约》被割让给波兰。
波兰国家的领土面积超过11.2万平方公里，人口达460万人（1931年数据）。这些地区被称为“西白俄罗斯”，但波兰政府不承认这一名称，在官方文件中，这些地区通常被称为“东方领地”。
西白俄罗斯是波兰相对落后的农业边缘地区，主要被波兰用作原材料和廉价劳动力的来源。工业工作日长达10-12小时，工资比波兰本土地区低得多。超过80%的当地人口从事农业工作。
波兰当局对白俄罗斯人实行波兰化和同化政策，不允许在政府机构使用白俄罗斯语，并禁止白俄罗斯学校。到1934年，西白俄罗斯的白俄罗斯学校从原来的400所减少到16所，1939年时则完全消失。白俄罗斯的新闻媒体也遭到了严厉打压。1927年合法出版的23份白俄罗斯报刊在1932年减少到8份，到1937年只剩下亲波兰和宗教类出版物。西白俄罗斯没有白俄罗斯剧院和音乐机构，白俄罗斯出版物、图书馆、读书室也被当局以各种借口关闭。
波兰政府的主要治理手段是强制，甚至是恐怖手段。警方在镇压农民抗议时进行大规模的镇压行动，政治审判也是常事。为了隔离“社会危险分子”，当局使用监狱。1934年，波兰建立了别列扎-卡尔图兹集中营，在其存在的五年里，约有1万多名囚犯被关押。
白俄罗斯人民从未屈服于被压迫的命运。20年来，他们不断进行社会和民族解放斗争，尽管形式各异，但从未停止。工人和农民的抗议行动时有发生。文化启蒙组织也做出了重大贡献，其中以白俄罗斯学校协会为首。长期以来，西白俄罗斯的革命运动由西白俄罗斯共产党领导。
20世纪30年代末，来自纳粹德国的战争威胁笼罩着整个欧洲。为了防止战争，西欧主要国家和苏联需要联合行动。苏联试图与英国、法国等西方国家组成反希特勒联盟，但这些国家拒绝了这样的提议，私下里希望将德国的侵略引向东方。苏联被迫选择：要么独自与日益强大的德国对抗，要么通过外交手段化解威胁。最终，苏联于1939年8月23日在莫斯科与德国签署了《互不侵犯条约》。该协议附有一份关于划分势力范围的秘密附加议定书，根据该文件，西白俄罗斯的土地被纳入苏联的势力范围。
1939年9月1日，希特勒的德国进攻波兰，第二次世界大战爆发。德军多个师越过边境，在几个方向迅速向波兰境内推进。波兰政府和指挥部未能组织有效的防御，在战争第三周便放弃了国家。
9月中旬，德军抵达西白俄罗斯和西乌克兰边境。德国领导层根据8月23日的协议，催促苏联尽快对波兰采取行动。然而，斯大林拖延了行动。直到波兰军队基本上被击溃，几乎所有的波兰本土被德军占领，国家只剩下零星的抵抗点时，苏联政府才命令红军跨越边境。
9月17日早上，苏联政府向波兰驻莫斯科大使递交了一份照会。照会中写道：“波德战争揭示了波兰国家的内部崩溃。在为期十天的军事行动中，波兰失去了所有工业区和文化中心。波兰首都华沙已不复存在。波兰政府已经瓦解，没有任何生存迹象。这意味着波兰国家及其政府实际上已不复存在。由此，苏波之间签订的条约失效。波兰在没有领导的情况下被孤立，成为各种偶然事件和意外的沃土，可能对苏联构成威胁。因此，苏联政府不能再对这些事实保持中立。苏联政府也不能对生活在波兰境内的同胞乌克兰人和白俄罗斯人置之不理，他们被抛弃在命运的手中，毫无保护。鉴于这种情况，苏联政府已命令红军总指挥部，指示部队跨越边境，保护西乌克兰和西白俄罗斯人民的生命和财产。”
这份照会由苏联外交人民委员莫洛托夫签署。他还通过广播向苏联人民发表了讲话。
苏联军队迅速推进：9月18日，他们占领了斯文特尼、利达、诺沃格鲁德克、斯洛尼姆、沃尔科维斯克；9月19日占领了普鲁扎尼和科布林。
波兰军队的大部分部队在没有战斗的情况下投降。由乌克兰人和白俄罗斯人为主的部队倒向红军，并立即被遣散回家。然而，波兰军官和警察则被成批送往苏联的集中营。
西白俄罗斯的大部分居民以喜悦迎接苏联士兵，并给予了积极的支持。许多地方成立了军事革命委员会，这些委员会组织了由工人和农民组成的队伍。这些队伍解除警察的武装，负责保护桥梁、企业和其他重要设施。然而，格罗德诺的战斗持续了几天。大约3000名训练部队的士兵、军官以及警察进行了抵抗。9月20日，格罗德诺被攻占，9月22日，苏联军队进入布列斯特-立托夫斯克和比亚韦斯托克。
红军到达后，新的政权机构开始在各省和县中心建立。在城市中，由临时管理机构负责，而在小镇和乡村中则由乡村委员会负责。他们首先进行了初步改革，随后组织了西白俄罗斯人民议会代表的选举，以解决国家制度的主要问题。选举于1939年10月22日在政治热情高涨的氛围中举行。
西白俄罗斯人民议会于1939年10月28日至30日在比亚韦斯托克召开。会议通过了宣布建立苏维埃政权并将西白俄罗斯并入白俄罗斯苏维埃社会主义共和国（BSSR）的声明。1939年11月2日，苏联最高苏维埃第一届非常会议第五次会议决定满足西白俄罗斯人民议会的请求，将西白俄罗斯并入苏联，并与白俄罗斯苏维埃社会主义共和国合并。最终的立法行动是1939年11月14日白俄罗斯苏维埃社会主义共和国最高苏维埃第三次非常会议通过的《接受西白俄罗斯加入白俄罗斯苏维埃社会主义共和国的法案》。这样，白俄罗斯的领土完整得以恢复，白俄罗斯人民实现了统一。
共和国的领土和人口几乎翻了一番。BSSR在接纳的西白俄罗斯土地上成立了巴拉诺维奇州、比亚韦斯托克州、布列斯特州、维列伊卡州和皮斯克州。这些地区被卷入了激进的社会经济变革，进行了企业和银行的国有化，农业集体化和机械化。教育、卫生、科学和文化领域也发生了根本性变革。消除文盲的工作得到了加强，针对不同族群开设了学校：1941年，在BSSR的西部地区有4192所白俄罗斯学校，987所波兰学校，173所俄语学校，168所犹太学校，63所立陶宛学校，43所乌克兰学校。剧院得以创建，100家电影院、92个文化馆和220个图书馆开门运营。各个州的城市和县中心都开始发行白俄罗斯语的期刊。然而，西部地区在经济和社会领域的进步因伟大卫国战争的爆发而中断。
