PM: Over 70,000 people took part in Belarus' reforestation campaign

Over 70,000 people took part in the national reforestation campaign “Bringing forests back to life”, Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko told journalists after planting trees in Bykhov District flanked by a delegation of the Council of Ministers, BelTA has learned.

A reminder, Bykhov District was the most affected district of Mogilev Oblast by the summer storm. The extent of the damage, Roman Golovchenko noted, was large, and therefore a lot of work had to be done in the district. Belarusians showed how much they care about forests by joining the reforestation campaign “Bringing forests back to life”.

“After our forests were ravaged by the natural disaster, the president announced  the campaign “Bringing forests back to life”, and everyone responded immediately to this initiative. These days we are completing this month-long campaign. The scale of our people's involvement is very impressive. Today, when we were planting the forest, we talked to local forestry employees: they said that people call the forestry hotline and ask if they can come. Some people bring their family members. Some people planted as much as 2 hectares. More than 70,000 people took part in this campaign: those were forestry employees, volunteers, members of public associations, employees of the public sector, ministries, departments, all senior officials. And the results are also good: about 5,000 hectares of forest plantations have been restored, more than 34 million seedlings have been planted. The figure is impressive. I remember, when the forestry minister delivered a report to the president in August, he said that we would hardly plant more than 27 million seedlings. But we have already planted over 34 million. Foresters have provided us with the necessary number of seedlings,” the prime minister noted.

Forests are very important for Belarusians. “Forests are a special ecosystem for our people. Remember the saying: if there are a lot of forests, take care of them, if there are few forests, do not cut them down, if there are no forests, plant them. Why does a forest hold such a special place for Belarusians? Because it is inextricably linked with the entire history of our people. It is a shelter from evil people, wars, conflicts; it is a source of building materials. A forest will always feed us in times of crop failure, bad years. I think this is the reason why we care about our forests so much. I want to thank all Belarusians who responded to the initiative of the president of our country. And we are finishing this month on a high note. I think that a beautiful forest will grow on the sites that we worked on. I congratulate everyone on such effective work,” the head of government said.

On 9 November Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko and a delegation of the Council of Ministers helped foresters of Bykhov District plant a new forest as part of the national reforestation campaign “Bringing forests back to life”. Bykhov District was the most affected district of Mogilev Oblast by the summer storm. The Council of Ministers delegation planted a new forest on an area of 2.2 hectares. A total of 12,200 birch and pine seedlings were planted.

I recently learned my surname is not Polish, but Belarusian. I heard you on shortwave in the past and am so happy to listen online in English. We hear nothing about Belarus here in the US so I am so glad to learn about your country. Keep on broadcasting in English. I also joined the Hoererklub on Facebook as I can understand German. If you have information or a station pennant, I will very much appreciate it.
