Statements made by the U.S. Department of State and the European External Action Service (EEAS) to express concern about Belarusian citizens represent the pinnacle of cynicism, BelTA learned from Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anatoly Glaz. The official commented on these statements triggered by changes in the list of administrative procedures Belarusian embassies can perform.
Anatoly Glaz said: “We didn't ask them for a legal evaluation of our regulatory acts. As a matter of principle, Belarusians can live just fine without their valuable advice about how we should live and build our independent state. The time to give valuable advice to us went away at some point in the past when Bill Clinton's term of office ended. By the way, the U.S. Department of State keeps repeating this mantra about supporting our independence.”
The official went on saying: “Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of State dares evaluate absolutely mundane aspects of our internal legislation. This strange logic is probably designed for banana republics. The United States of America is a world champion in the number of absolutely draconian norms of domestic legislation. Mass surveillance, causeless arrests, state-authorized torture, prisons outside national jurisdiction and so on. Not only Belarus but most of the civilized countries have huge questions about that.”
“The United States of America where over 1,106 ‘Jan. 6 prisoners' get beaten up in solitary confinement, where Stewart Rhodes gets 18 years in prison for allegedly storming the Capitol when he was nowhere near it, where Joseph Biggs, who hurt no one, got 17 years, where the Venezuelan diplomat Alex Saab is illegally kept in prison, where Joshua Schulte gets 80 years in prison for simply telling the truth has absolutely no right to teach democracy and human rights to anyone,” the press secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
“Our counterparties assumed that the presidential decree [to reduce the list of administrative procedures Belarusian embassies are allowed to perform] harms thousands of Belarusians,” the official said. “At the same time they failed to mention the damage their actions cause to millions of our compatriots. Illegal sanctions affect entire branches of the Belarusian economy with hundreds of thousands of workers. Belarusians have been deprived of normal communication by air with western countries. On a whim of the U.S. government even sales of tickets to our citizens have been restricted as well as aircraft maintenance. Shipments of important medical accessories for treating Belarusians have been restricted. Digital payments have been made difficult for the private sector as well as transactions between relatives on different sides of the border. Freight transportation to and from the European Union has been virtually paralyzed despite the huge number of people working in this industry. Countries of the European Union impede Belarusians and even their own citizens in travelling across the land border.”
“There is nothing more to say. Even getting a Schengen visa or an American visa is a quest that can take Belarusians months. It is often accompanied by explicitly humiliating demands and procedures. They should think about these consular functions and services of theirs,” Anatoly Glaz said.
“This is why statements by the U.S. Department of State and the European External Action Service, who say they worry about Belarusian citizens, represent the pinnacle of cynicism. But if they want to talk about it, we are always ready. But only for a mutually respectful dialogue. If you want to lecture us, find someone else, find something else but independent Belarus,” Anatoly Glaz concluded.

I recently learned my surname is not Polish, but Belarusian. I heard you on shortwave in the past and am so happy to listen online in English. We hear nothing about Belarus here in the US so I am so glad to learn about your country. Keep on broadcasting in English. I also joined the Hoererklub on Facebook as I can understand German. If you have information or a station pennant, I will very much appreciate it.
