The OSCE can count on Belarus as a donor of security in the European region, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said at the meeting with the high-ranking officials of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on 5 July, BelTA reported.
“You are aware of our potential. You can always count on us, especially as far as the donation of security in the European region is concerned,” the head of state said. He remarked that there are conflicts in such regions as Ukraine, Nagorno-Karabakh, Transnistria. “These are very important regions where we should sort out things in a European, civilized manner,” Alexander Lukashenko added.
“We have already discussed many issues of pan-European security, other issues included in the OSCE agenda with you. These issues remain important. This importance is even enhancing,” the president stressed.
He said that the processes of illegal migration, drug transit, human trafficking, illegal transportation of radioactive elements and other problems are escalating and becoming more dangerous. “Perhaps, they are less in the spotlight than illegal migration now. But if we neglect these problems, there will be a terrible outburst in the near future,” the head of state added.
Alexander Lukashenko remarked that Belarus has always been an active participant of the OSCE PA’s activities. After the meeting in Minsk our country is going to take a more active part in the parliamentary dimension of the organization and in the OSCE in general.
President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Christine Muttonen, in turn, agreed with the position of the head of state on ensuring peace and security. “As parliamentarians, we have an active position, openly discuss topical issues,” she said.
According to Christine Muttonen, it is also important to create platforms for the governments of the states to continue the dialogue on the urgent issues from the agenda.
“Today we understand perfectly well that parliamentary diplomacy should be vigorously developing. Today we often see that the governments of certain member states block the dialogue,” Christine Muttonen said. “Therefore, we are very glad to hold the session of our organization in Minsk because the parliamentary delegation of Belarus has always been very active in the OSCE.”
