Sabalenka to start US Open run against Catherine Harrison

Belarus’ world number 6 Aryna Sabalenka will face world number 243 Catherine Harrison of the United States in the US Open first round on 30 August, BelTA has learned.

World number 26 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus will open against world number 244 Ashlyn Krueger of the United States. Belarus’ world number 32 Aliaksandra Sasnovich will take on Italy’s world number 99 Elisabetta Cocciaretto. On the first day of the 142nd edition of the US Open former world number one Simona Halep of Romania (World No.7) lost to Ukraine’s world number 124 Daria Snigur, 2-6, 6-0, 4-6.

In the men’s singles opener Belarus’ world number 73 Ilya Ivashka will play world number 287 Sam Querrey of the United States. The winner will face either Poland’s world number 9 Hubert Hurkacz or Germany’s world number 41 Oscar Otte in the second round.

The U.S. Open is set to have a record-setting total prize of $60 million. Winners in the men’s and women’s singles events will earn $2.6 million each, finalists - $1.3 million. The final Grand Slam event of the year will be over on 11 September.
