Memorial to WWI victims to be set up in Smorgon

Three bronze sculptures that make part of the future memorial to WWI victims have been unveiled in Smorgon, we learnt from Deputy Chairman of the Smorgon District Executive Committee Gennady Bychko.
The work on the memorial is in full swing. The construction works are conducted by a local construction and installation company. The three bronze sculptures were installed on the past weekends. These are the statue “Winged Genius of Soldier’s Glory”. The statue weighs four tonnes and is twelve meters high. Two smaller statues are placed nearby. These are “Soldiers of the First World War” and “Refugees”.
Russia’s state-run corporation Rosatom will finance part of the works. Its funds will be used to install a commemorative stone with an address to descendants and commemorative signs along the park.
Besides, the German Embassy in Belarus will finance the landscaping works. In line with the project, about 100 trees will be planted here, including willows, birches, red oaks, maples and larches, and white cedars.
The works will be concluded in July. The memorial will be unveiled on 1 August.
