Belarus, Russia working out agreement on spent nuclear fuel management

Belarus and Russia are working out an intergovernmental agreement on managing spent nuclear fuel of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich made the relevant statement in BelTA's press center on 20 December.

In his words, cooperation with Russia will advance within the framework of further exploitation of the Belarusian nuclear power plant and the extension of its service life. It provides for a partnership in a number of areas such as scientific support for the project, the introduction of new technologies for repairs, and the involvement of Russian institutes in the development of legal documents.

“Together with Russian colleagues we are working out an intergovernmental agreement on managing spent nuclear fuel of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The document is supposed to be prepared for signing by 1 July 2022,” Viktor Karankevich said.

Apart from that, radioactive waste of the Belarusian nuclear power plant is supposed to be transported to Russia for processing. Belarus and Russia have signed an intergovernmental agreement on transporting nuclear materials.
