Belarus’ Tsurkin wins European 50m butterfly gold


        Yevgeny Tsurkin of Belarus and 2012 Olympic champion Florent Manaudou of France both clocked 23.00 to claim the 50m butterfly gold at the 32nd LEN European Swimming Championships in Berlin, Germany.
With the worst semifinal time (23.60) among the finalists, the Belarusian legged behind a little at the start of the final race. He was able to catch up in the second half of the distance.
There was no silver medalist at the event. Bronze was also collected by two athletes as Andriy Govorov of Ukraine and Benjamin Proud of the UK finished in 23.21.
Yevgeny Tsurkin’s gold is the first medal for Belarus at the 2014 European Swimming Championships.
