Belarus, Latvia considering navigation development on Western Dvina

Transport Ministries of Belarus and Latvia are considering the issue of developing navigation on the Western Dvina, press service of the Belarusian Transport and Communications Ministry reported following the talks between Anatoly Sivak and Communications Ministry of Latvia Anrijs Matiss in Riga. Belarus believes that the two countries do not use the potential of the inland waterways in full for the transportation of cargo and passengers.
The development of navigation on the Western Dvina could become an alternative to the other types of transportation.
In this respect the participants of the meeting agreed it was appropriate to work out an intergovernmental agreement on inland navigation.
The parties considered the prospects of opening representative offices or joint Belarusian-Latvian transport and logistics companies in Latvia. According to them, there is a need to develop and sign an agreement on cooperation between the Belarusian Association of International Forwarders (BAIF) and the Latvian Association of Freight Forwarders and Logistics. A roundtable will be held during the Belarusian Transport Week in Minsk on 7-9 October to intensify cooperation in the area.
