The Belarusian women’s national tennis team have held their first training session in Budapest where they will play in the Fed Cup qualifying Group I (Europe/Africa zone).
In the absence of world No.2 Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka Olga Govortsova (98) will be the leader of the Belarusian team. Skipper of the Belarusian team Tatiana Poutchek has also included Alexandra Sasnovich (151) and Ilona Kremen (248) in her squad. Irina Shimanovich (639) will be a reserve. Last week the players trained at the Minsk Palace of Tennis and then departed for Budapest.
Belarus will start their qualifying campaign in Group D against Turkey. On 6 February they take on Portugal and then face Bulgaria on 7 February. Belarus are 22nd in the ITF Fed Cup Nations Ranking. Bulgaria occupy 27th place while Portugal are 35th and Turkey 39th.
Winners of the four groups will be drawn against each other in the play-off round where two sides which will continue competing for a place in World Group II will be determined. The World Group II play-offs will be held in early April.
