World No.2 Victoria Azarenka lost the second match of the 2013 TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships in Istanbul.
Azarenka suffered another defeat against China’s Na Li (5) 6:2, 6:1. The match lasted for one hour and seventeen minutes. When the score was 2:3 Victoria Azarenka suddenly felt backache and took a medical timeout. Despite the pain the Belarusian decided to continue the match but could not play comfortably and was losing point after point.
Na Li then progressed to the semifinal in which she beat Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic (6) 6:4, 6:2 but lost to Serena Williams (1) in the final. The American took the WTA Championships title in a superb fashion having fought back in a dramatic final 2:6, 6:3, 6:0 and got $2.145 million in prize money. Earlier Serena Williams had won against Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic (8) 6:4, 2:6, 6:4 in the semifinal.
The Chinese duo Peng Shuai/Hsieh Su-Wei overpowered Russia’s Yelena Vesnina and Yekaterina Makarova 6:4, 7:5 in the doubles final.
