Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka fought hard but lost to Russia’s Maria Sharapova in the French Open semifinal.
Sharapova (world No.2) ended Azarenka’s French Open run in the 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 victory in 2 hours and 10 minutes. It has been Sharapova’s sixth victory in 13 matches against Azarenka. For the Belarusian it was the eighth French Open and the first time she had made it to the semis. In 2009 and 2011 she reached the quarterfinal stage.
This season Victoria Azarenka won the Australian Open Grand Slam, later pocketing another title at a tournament in Doha, Qatar. Victoria Azarenka has won 16 WTA titles during her professional career.
The Maria Sharapova vs. Serena Williams French Open final will be held on 8 June while the ultimate match on the men’s side is due on 9 June.
