Belarusian Railways has signed a contract with the Swiss company Stadler Bussnang AG for the delivery of six electric trains for regional lines, the press service of Belarusian Railways told media. Belarusian Railways is expected to get four of the electric trains in 2013 and two more in 2014. The new trains will comprise five cars and will boast better comfort and passenger capacity. For the convenience of passengers the seats will be positioned one after another, with additional shelves for luggage available.
Belarusian Railways signed the first contract for the delivery of ten new-generation electric trains in March 2010. Five of them were delivered in 2011, with another five shipped in 2012.
At present Belarusian Railways uses six electric trains for urban lines and four electric trains for business class regional lines. The new-type electric trains have received a warm welcome. Since Belarusian Railways started using them for regular transportation, the urban communication trains have transported about 2 million people, with over 1 million people transported by regional business class trains. Thus, Belarusian Railways continues putting consistent efforts into implementing Belarus President decree No. 202 on measures to develop public passenger transportation by railroad, the press service of Belarusian Railways told media.
