Belarus’ world number 17 Victoria Azarenka went off to a good start at the Madrid Open defeating world number 39 Victorija Golubic of Switzerland, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian will next play Slovenia’s world number 24 Tamara Zidansek.
Belarus’ world number 4 Aryna Sabalenka lost her opener to world number 33 Amanda Anisimova of the United States, 2-6, 6-3, 4-6.
Aryna Sabalenka paired with Spain’s Paula Badosa will take on the U.S. duo Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff. Belarus-Russia tandem Lidziya Marozava and Natela Dzalamidze will play Australia-France duo Ajla Tomljanovic and Alize Cornet.
The tournament in the Spanish capital will finish on 7 May.
