MFA: Belarusian side welcomes European Commission's attention to situation at EU external borders

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus issued a statement regarding the upcoming visit of the President of the European Commission to Poland and Lithuania.

 

"The Belarusian side welcomes the European Commission's attention to the situation at the external borders of the European Union.
 
We are confident that the upcoming visit of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to the Belarusian-Polish and Belarusian-Lithuanian borders could be an important event contributing to an objective and comprehensive analysis of the processes taking place. This, of course, is provided that truly significant topics are included in the programme.
 
It is important to pay attention to the kilometre-long queues at border crossing points, where people, including EU citizens, are compelled to spend long hours and even days waiting for border crossing. It would also be useful to examine the situation in the border forests, where unmarked graves of migrants who died while trying to escape the consequences of crises caused by the policies of Western states in their home regions were found.
 
The issue of security deserves special attention in connection with Poland and Lithuania's withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention: in the absence of official information, it is impossible to completely rule out the presence of minefields on our borders.
 
It would be desirable to also examine the conditions of detention of persons subjected to so-called "pushbacks." Their testimonies could shed light on the actual practice of compliance with European democratic procedures and standards by Poland and Lithuania. It would also be reasonable to ask the Polish side, as the largest beneficiary of European funds, how much EU money was spent on building the border fence and how transparently it was used.
It is also important to consider the impact of such structures on the environment, as well as their compliance with the declared "green agenda" and EU commitments to biodiversity conservation.
 
From a strategic point of view, it would be appropriate to discuss with the military and political leadership of Poland and Lithuania their implementation of the provisions of the Vienna Document and agreements on additional confidence- and security-building measures with Belarus. It would also be useful to hear explanations regarding the repeatedly broadcast claims about "Russian and Belarusian troops preparing to attack Europe by 2030," against the backdrop of which the EU is increasing military spending to 5% of GDP by cutting social programmes.
 
The issue of historical memory also deserves special attention. For example, the coincidence of the numbers of the Bundeswehr brigade stationed in Lithuania with the military unit from the Second World War that participated in the attack on Belarus in 1941 causes legitimate confusion. We recall that during the Nazi occupation, every third citizen of our country was killed.
 
We are convinced that such visits could contribute to the development of constructive dialogue and mutual understanding in relations with the European Union's neighbours, but only provided that all the issues we have raised are considered honestly, openly and comprehensively. Otherwise, it is simply a tourist trip under the flash of cameras."

21st June was fifth International Yoga Day observed across the world. The theme for Yoga Day 2019 was "Yoga for Climate Action”. On this day, which is dedicated to inner and outer well-being of human body, people across the world practice yoga in groups. The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga, a physical, mental and spiritual practice.
