Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski assessed the prospects for normalizing relations with Minsk following a meeting with his Belarusian counterpart Maxim Ryzhenkov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, RMF24 reports.
The Polish foreign minister called the meeting a breakthrough, noting that relations between the two countries at such a level had likely not existed since 2016.
The diplomat also stated that contacts between the countries are also taking place through other ministries and at various other levels.
Radosław Sikorski also announced plans to open a new Polish embassy building in Minsk in the near future. Speaking on the prospects for normalizing relations with Belarus, the foreign minister noted: “It’s like a snowdrop that can bloom if the weather is favorable.”
Earlier, the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the foreign ministers of Belarus and Poland had met on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly’s high-level week in New York on 22 September. The meeting focused on evaluating the state of Belarusian-Polish relations and ways to develop them further in the interests of both countries. The parties also discussed the situation in the region.
