CSTO, CIS rehearse coordination for border crisis situations

The CSTO and the CIS have rehearsed coordination in the event of a crisis situation on external border, spokesman for the CSTO Joint Staff Vladislav Shchegrikovich told BelTA.

“On 17–19 August, at the invitation of the chairman of the Coordination Service of the CIS Border Troops Commanders Council, Colonel General Alexander Manilov, a delegation of the CSTO Joint Staff headed by Colonel General Andrei Serdyukov took part in international events held on the site by the Russian FSB Border Directorate for the city of St. Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast. The participants discussed the organization experience and specific features of guarding the external borders of the CIS member states and the priorities and prospects for military-technical cooperation,” the spokesman said.

“The main objective of the joint command-and-staff exercise, the second stage of which involved the simulation of tactical episodes, was to improve coordination between border and other agencies of the CIS member states during preparation for and in the course of resolving (eliminating) a crisis situation on the external borders of the CIS,” Vladislav Shchegrikovich informed.

Following the events, the Chief of the CSTO Joint Staff, Colonel General Andrei Serdyukov, noted that the relevance of ensuring collective security is increasing, and this requires close cooperation with all interested international organizations. He emphasized that many practical issues are being successfully practiced during joint drills and exercises. When in St. Petersburg, the participants also discussed avenues for further cooperation between the CSTO Joint Staff and the CIS Border Troops Commanders Council.
