Hungarian FM: Europe needs peace and coherence to be strong and safe again

Europe needs peace and coherence to become strong and safe again, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary Péter Szijjártó said at the high-level international conference “Eurasian Security: Reality and Prospects in a Transforming World” in Minsk on 26 October, BelTA has learned.

According to him, security issues are one of the two biggest challenges today. “There is another challenge - a serious drop in competitiveness of the European economy. This is not just a political statement. This statement is based on facts,” Péter Szijjártó said.

“The European continent, the European Union itself are facing serious challenges related to security and a sharp decline in economic competitiveness. And this has left us with a difficult choice,” the minister noted. “We, Hungarians, are members of the European Union and members of NATO. We are interested in a strong and safe Europe. However, for Europe to regain its strength and security, two things are needed. The first is peace, and the second is coherence. Peace and coherence are what will allow Europe to be strong and safe again. European peoples, including Hungarians, have already paid a heavy price for the war in Ukraine, despite the fact that we are not responsible for it,” Péter Szijjártó said.
