Bill on Belarusian People’s Congress discussed at Council of Republic

Chair of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly Natalya Kochanova hosted a session of the expert council on 27 September, BelTA learned from the press service of the upper house of parliament.

Opening the meeting, Natalya Kochanova emphasized that the legislators face a serious and responsible task to develop legal mechanisms to implement the constitutional reforms approved at the national referendum.

In order to grant the Belarusian People’s Congress the constitutional status of the highest representative body of the Republic of Belarus it is necessary to develop a completely new law.

The work on the bill “On the Belarusian People’s Congress” is on the home stretch. The document will clearly define the scope of authority of this body that will develop and implement foreign and domestic policy, economic strategy, address other vital issues. The bill will also define the possibility of participation of civil society in the work of the congress. These approaches should be introduced to the Electoral Code of the Republic of Belarus.

“We must arrive at an absolutely consolidated opinion before this issue is discussed at a meeting with the head of state,” Natalya Kochanova stressed.
