Belarus to upgrade its transport infrastructure ahead of 2014 IIHF WC

Belarusian transport infrastructure is being upgraded as Minsk is gearing up to host the 2014 IIHF World Championship. To improve the quality and availability of services to individuals, the country will continue implementing innovative technologies and acquiring modern rolling stock with a view to further develop transport links inside the country and with other states. Upgrade of the roads in Minsk is among this year’s priorities for the Belavtodor department. One of the main concerns is the maintenance of roads of common use. There are also plans to start using new technologies and materials under the departmental program for the design and construction of pilot sites. The Minsk National Airport is a kind of strategic installation, said the Ministry of Transport noted. The Belarusian Transport Ministry expects that the reconstruction of the existing terminal at the airport will be finished by 2014. Design documentation is expected to be ready in February. Also this year works will start on the preparation stage for the construction of the second runway at the national airport. Currently, the government is deicing on raising a Chinese loan for this purpose. The ministry also informed that it is working on the measures to upgrade regional airports to bring them in line with international requirements.
