Orthodox Christians celebrate Epiphany

Epiphany alongside with Easter is one of the most ancient Christian feasts. This feast commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ and reminds the believers of their own christening ceremonies. The celebrations begin in the evening of 18 January when all Orthodox Christians celebrate the Epiphany Eve with the blessing of water after the liturgy in churches. The second blessing of water takes place on Epiphany Day, 19 January. At this time, the water acquires healing properties and retains them throughout the year. It is given to the seriously ill, and it is also used to bless churches and homes. The tradition of taking a dip in an ice-hole during the Epiphany has survived to this day.
