A ceremony dedicated to the Holocaust Remembrance and Heroism Day was held at the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Minsk on 8 April. The Belarusian citizens who saved Jews during World War II were awarded the Righteous Among the Nations medals and certificates of honor during the ceremony. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Embassy of Israel in Belarus, Belarusian agencies and universities, the union of Belarusian Jewish public associations and communities, and diplomatic missions of foreign states. The event was organized by the Israeli Cultural Center at the Embassy of Israel in Belarus. When presenting the Righteous among the Nations certificates of honor to the citizens of Belarus who rescued Jews during the war, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Israel to Belarus Yosef Shagal noted that this title has been conferred on 776 Belarusians.
This year five names have been added to the list. “It is impossible to get used to the pain. Every year, when we approach this day, we feel pain and we grieve. We cannot allow this disaster to ever happen again,” the Ambassador said.
