Viking train service might be extended to Turkey in 2013

The operations of the Viking container train might be extended to Turkey. The matter was discussed by the chiefs of Belarusian Railways and Lithuanian Railways at the conference timed to the 10th anniversary of the train in Vilnius. The decision to extend the train route to Turkey was made after Bulgaria and Romania announced their plans to join the project. Stasis Gudvalis, Director of the Cargo Transportation Department at Lithuanian Railways informed that the Romanian railway service will decide on the accession to the Viking project after signing the memorandum.
Taking part in the conference in Vilnius were representatives of Sweden who are also interested in the Viking project. The Swedish railway service suggested transporting car parts from Sweden to Russia using the container train.
The Viking container train project is the joint project of the railway administrations of Belarus, Lithuania and Ukraine and stevedoring companies and ports of Klaipeda (Lithuania), Illichivsk and Odessa (Ukraine).
