The Fencing World Championships 2013 have kicked off in Hungary’s capital Budapest. Belarus will partake in six events, which are the men and women’s saber and the men’s foil, BelTA learnt from Yuri Zhiznevsky, the state coach of the national fencing team of the Sports and Tourism Ministry.
Valery Priyemko, Alexei Likhachevsky, Alexander Buikevich and Alexei Romanovich will represent Belarus in the men’s saber individual and team events. The women’s saber team includes Polina Kasperovich, Anna Ivanishchenko, Darya Andreyeva and Olga Kiselyova. Competing in the men’s foil will be Sergei Byk, Alexander Shelenkov, Yevgeny Ulasik and Alexander Lukashevich.
Belarus is not represented in the epee events. Artyom Chertovich, who should have represented the country in this sport, will miss the tournament because of an injury.
Qualifications in individual events are currently underway in Budapest. In the saber events Valery Priyemko and Alexei Likhachevsky advanced to the last 64 round where they will be later joined by Alexander Buikevich. Alexei Romanovich lost to Canada’s Shaul Gordon (10:15) and will not be able to take the place higher than 68. Two other Belarusians, Darya Andreyeva and Olga Kiselyova, have successfully got through the first qualifying round in the women’s saber.
The MOL World Fencing Championships in Budapest conclude on 12 August. The Belarusians will compete in the men’s individual saber on 7 August, the men’s individual foil and the women’s individual saber on 9 August and the men's team foil on 10 August. The ultimate day of the competition will see them feature in the women's team saber and the men’s team foil.
