Belarus’ inland water transport carried nearly 300,000 tonnes of cargo once the navigation season opened in 2013, we learnt from the press service of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
Parts of the rivers Neman, Sozh, Berezina, Dnieper, Pripyat, Western Dvina and Dnieper-Bug Canal are open for navigation. They account for over 76% of the total length of inland waterways in the country.
According to experts, in January-April 2013 capital investment in the sector exceeded $1 million. The ongoing projects include Dnieper-Bug Canal reconstruction and the construction of the Zaluzie shipping lock.
The Belarusian inland water system includes 10 river ports (Bobruisk, Brest, Gomel, Mikashevichi, Mogilev, Mozyr, Pinsk, Rechitsa, Vitebsk, Grodno) and four companies operating on the rivers Dnieper, Berezina, Sozh, Pripyat, Western Dvina, Neman, Mukhavets and Dnieper-Bug Canal.
