Belarus celebrates first victory at 2013 IIHF World Championship

The Belarusian national ice hockey team celebrated the first victory over Slovenia in the second Preliminary Round match of the 2013 IIHF World Championship in Stockholm, Sweden, on 5 May. As many as 1,411 supporters at the Globen Arena in Stockholm witnessed Belarus overpowering Slovenia 4-3 (1-1, 1-0, 2-2). That was the first match between Belarus and Slovenia since the latter defeated the Belarusians in the 2014 Sochi Olympic qualification in February.
The 2013 IIHF World Championship in Sweden and Finland will conclude on 19 May. Belarus have been drawn in group S and will play all Preliminary Round matches in Stockholm. Belarus lost 0-2 to the Czech Republic in the opening game on 3 May. In the Preliminary Round manager Andrei Skabelka’s team will encounter Sweden on 6 May, Canada on 10 May, Norway on 11 May, Denmark on 13 May and Switzerland on 14 May. Top four teams from group S and H (Helsinki) advance to the quarterfinal, while the worst teams from two groups will be relegated to Division I Group A, which is the second most important division under the aegis of the IIHF. Belarus, however, cannot be relegated this season as the country plays host to the next IIHF World Championship in 2014.
