Wooden People by director Viktor Asliuk has been selected for competition at the HotDocs international documentary festival that will take place in Toronto from 25 April to 5 May, we learnt from the National Film Studio Belarusfilm.
The competition program of the festival was announced on 19 March. Every year the festival shows more than 100 new documentary features from all over the world and is considered one of the most prestigious events in the world of nonfiction films.
Wooden People is a 26-minute documentary telling about Nikolai Tarasiuk, who lives alone in an empty village on the edge of the forest. He brings his world back to life by carving hundreds of wooden figurines. The old people die, the young people move to the city, but the wooden people engage Nikolai in a simulation of village life that is far from lonely.
The film is also on the competition program of Cinema du Reel in Paris which is running from 21 to 31 march at the Georges Pompidou National Center of Art and Culture in Paris. This forum has been held for more than 30 years. The program features about 200 films in different sections. In addition the festival directorate has decided to hold a retrospective review of the best documentaries of all time and peoples.
