Belarus’ legislation on refugees called most progressive in Europe

       Belarus’ legislation on refugees is the most progressive in Europe and in the world, Interior Minister of Belarus Mr Igor Shunevich told reporters following the signing of the memorandum of understanding on cooperation in refugee protection in Belarus between the Interior Ministry, international organizations and public associations. According to Igor Shunevich, following the document signing the sides will implement general principles and norms which can serve as a model now. “They will be used by the Interior Ministry, the Healthcare Ministry, the population protection system in relation to refugees, stateless citizens who stay on the territory of Belarus,” the minister said.
       UNHCR Representative in Belarus Ms Sholeh Safavi stressed that the Belarusian refugee legislation can serve as a model for other countries. In her words, Belarus has managed to seriously improve its refugee laws within a short period of time. “Particularly, the UNHCR praises the law concerning provision of additional and temporary protection to asylum seekers and refugees. It is important that these people can arrive in the country, have access to the basic forms of education, healthcare, employment,” said Sholeh Safavi.
