Belarus’ Interior Ministry registers more asylum seekers

The number of refugees applying for asylum in Belarus is on the rise, Deputy Head of the Department for Citizenship and Migration of the Interior Ministry of Belarus Alexander Tatura said.

The refugee status in Belarus has been granted to 857 foreigners from 15 countries. Every fifth of them has been given the citizenship of the Republic of Belarus. This is obviously the highest evaluation of the states activity on refugees’ protection.

The mounting number of asylum seekers is driven by the continuing inflow of forced migrants. First of all these are Afghan nationals. Besides, Belarus’ migration services have recently started receiving asylum applications from the nationals of Syria, Egypt, Yemen, Lebanon and Libya.

The expansion of the cooperation with the CSTO and UN on effective counteracting forced migration is one of the priorities of the Interior Ministry of Belarus today.
