Draft resolution is in. EP plans not to recognize results of election in Belarus

Members of the European Parliament intend to call on the EU countries not to recognize the results of the presidential election in Belarus. A draft resolution on Belarus was published on the website of the European Parliament, BelTA learned.

The European Parliament reiterates its non-recognition of the election of Aleksandr Lukashenko as President of Belarus and considers the current regime in our country “illegitimate, illegal and criminal” and “reaffirms its unwavering support for the Belarusian people in their pursuit of democracy, freedom and human rights.”

The document denounces “the lack of freedom, fairness and transparency” ahead of the presidential election in Belarus. It calls for the EU member states and the international community to categorically reject the upcoming elections in Belarus and the run-up campaign as a sham. Thus, the matter is about non-recognition of the election, which has not even taken place and the results of which are unknown.

The document reads that the election “does not meet minimum international standards for democratic elections”. The European Parliament calls for the EU, its member states and the international community to continue not to recognize the legitimacy of Aleksandr Lukashenko as president after 26 January 2025, and calls for “free and fair elections to be held in Belarus”.

It bears underscoring that the document calls not to recognize the election that has not even taken place yet. At the same time, the European Union constantly talks about some “fair and transparent elections”. In their opinion, our election is going to be “not fair and not transparent”. In other words, over 30 years, the “impartial and objective” approaches of European parliamentarians to Belarus' elections have not changed.

According to Director General of the National Library of Belarus Vadim Gigin, Western structures, including the European Union, would draft their findings on elections in Belarus in advance. “The assessments they gave were unsurprising. Reports by election observation groups they sent, or reports of embassies were filled with some details and presented in the right way. It was an initial order, which was prepared even before the start of the election campaign. Their non-recognition of our elections is exclusively connected with the policy - both internal and external - pursued by Belarus,” Vadim Gigin said.

The Director general of the National Library believes that such assessments are an interference in domestic affairs. “This time they have simply thrown away all decency. As we see in the West, the rhetoric of Trump or European leaders has become even more cynical. If earlier they tried to cover their actions with some vail of democratic procedures, now they don't do that. The norms of democracy are openly violated. For example, the cancelation of the results of the first round of the presidential election in Romania,” he said.

According to Vadim Gigin, any assessments from the structures, which themselves are the initiators of violations of the legal rights of their citizens on their own territory, are simply ridiculous. “If we talk seriously, they have no influence on the political processes in Belarus,” Vadim Gigin said.
