Three local border traffic checkpoints on the Belarusian-Lithuanian border will be given the international status. This was announced at a meeting of the Belarus and Lithuania customs executives at the border checkpoint "Kamenny Log", the head for customs control of Belarus’ State Customs Committee, Vladimir Orlovsky, told reporters.
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss the ways of improving the conditions for the movement of goods and means of transport through the Belarusian-Lithuanian border. Today’s task number one is to reduce the queues at checkpoints. The meeting identified a number of measures to expedite border clearance for vehicles and exchange information about the causes of queues in real time. One of the solutions to the problem is to increase the number of checkpoints on the Belarusian-Lithuanian border, and reorganize a number of local border traffic checkpoints into international ones. According to Vladimir Orlovsky, at the first stage of this process the customs services of the two countries will reorganize "Vidzy-Tvyaryacus", "Moldevichi-Adutiskis" and "Losha-Sumskas".
One of the main reasons for the queues at the border is increasing flow of goods and passengers. In H1 passenger traffic at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border went up by 11% from the same period last year.
