Slavonic Theater Meetings festival opens in Gomel

       The opening of the 12th international festival Slavonic Theater Meetings took place in Gomel. The Gomel Region Drama Theater will house performances by Belarusian, Russian, Ukrainian, Moldovan, and Kazakhstani theater groups. The program of the forum includes productions of various genres, from exquisite classics to modern performances. The festival will open with the two act tragicomedy “St. Valentine’s Day” of the Kaliningrad Oblast Drama Theater. The first festival Slavonic Theater Meetings was held in 1989. Partaking in it were theater groups from Gomel Oblast, Bryansk Oblast and Chernigov Oblast. The festival became international in 1994. Since then Gomel has hosted it once every three years.
       This year’s edition of the festival will mark the 75th anniversary of the Gomel Oblast Drama Theater. The festival aims to unite the theater companies, strengthen the traditions of the Belarusian theater and promote its modern trends, and to present the masterpieces of Belarusian and world cultural heritage to the Belarusian audience.
