Azarenka lifts Western & Southern Open trophy

The best Belarusian tennis player Victoria Azarenka has overpowered Serena Williams, of the U.S., in the final match of the Western & Southern Open tournament. In the final Victoria Azarenka put up a brilliant performance and showed a good character, which led her to a 2:6, 6:2, 7:6 (8:6) victory. It took the Belarusian 2 hours and 29 minutes to see off Serena Williams, who is currently first in the WTA rankings. Victoria Azarenka had to struggle to find her play as she lost the first set 2:6 without any chances to gain something from it. Serena Williams wanted to end the encounter in two sets and fought for every ball. However, it did not scare Victoria Azarenka who managed to grab a much-needed 6:2 victory in set 2. The last set turned out to be a sheer drama as both tennis players played at the top of their game. The third set went to tie-break, Victoria Azarenka clinching an 8:6 win to lift the title.
This was the 15th match-up between these two players. All in all, Victoria Azarenka, 24, won three matches against the 31-year-old American, including the recent victory. During this season Victoria Azarenka clinched one more win, at a tournament in Doha in February 2013. However, in May 2013 Serena Williams ousted the Belarusian at a competition in Rome. This is the first success for Victoria Azarenka at her three Western & Southern Open tournaments. Earlier she achieved her best result in 2009 when she entered the 3rd round.
