Amendments to the Election Code of Belarus will be presented to the President by 30 August, Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Lidia Yermoshina said.
The government session held to discuss the improvement of election legislation decided that the Central Election Commission will work together with the Center for Legislation and Legal Research of Belarus. “The document is supposed to be forwarded to the parliament on behalf of the head of state in the first week of September,” said Lidia Yermoshina.
According to the source, the procedure for candidates to finance their election propaganda was one of the hotly debated points at the session. It is expected to become privately funded.
“At the same time the government will still guarantee free air time on radio and television, free space [in printed media] the way the Election Code stipulates at present. The means to be released thanks to the change will be handed over to election commissions so that every voter could get information about his or her district’s candidates,” explained Lidia Yermoshina.
She added, the limit on personal coffers of candidates for presidency in Belarus is expected to be raised.
